Starting a Health Plan With Your Partner

Starting your health journey can be hard. Working through mental obstacles, physical ones, and even financial ones can be burdensome and can make you quit before you really get started.

Having a support system is especially important, and who better to join you on your journey than your spouse or partner?

Accountability can take you far with your goals, as you have someone else invested in your success with you. That makes it more difficult to give up because you don’t want to disappoint yourself or your partner.

Research shows that when one partner starts to lose weight or begins on their health journey, the other is more likely to follow suit, creating a “ripple effect” of weight change. In fact, a UK study found that couples who try to lose weight or choose to create healthier habits together are three times more likely to succeed.

This is likely due to the mutual support and motivation that comes with working towards a common goal. Additionally, creating healthier habits together can also strengthen your relationship. A survey found that 95% of respondents who make an effort to eat healthy are also in a relationship with someone who prioritizes a healthy lifestyle.

Some benefits of creating healthier habits with your partner can include:

1. Increased Motivation
Having someone to hold you accountable and share the experience with can be a great motivator, whether we’re talking about eating healthy or exercising together.

2. Improved Teamwork
Working together towards a common goal can strengthen your relationship and build teamwork skills. These skills can then be used in all aspects of your relationship, not just the health journey.

3. Healthier Habits
When both partners are committed to healthy eating, it’s easier to make positive changes to your diet and lifestyle. Shopping together and cooking together can be great bonding experiences and can help teach each partner about the other.

4. Enhanced Support
Having a partner to support and encourage you can make the process less intimidating and more enjoyable. Again, forming that bond with your partner can be effective in more ways than one.

If you’re struggling to find ways to start, try shopping together first. Finding healthy food options, such as fresh produce and non-processed foods, can be a great first step. Once you have healthy options at your disposal, it’s easier to choose them rather than a less healthy alternative.

Additionally, practice cooking with your partner! Freshly made food is infinitely better for you when compared to fast food options or even restaurants that don’t prioritize clean, healthy food items such as fresh meat and vegetables.

Overall, creating healthier habits with your partner can be a great way to achieve your health goals while also strengthening your relationship. Pursuing a common goal can help bring you closer together and create a bond that goes beyond just eating better together.

When you and your partner are aligned on a deep level, the mutual understanding and respect can lead to great things.
