General Tso’s Meatballs

General Tso Sauce is a sweet n’ spicy Chinese sauce that is extremely popular in Chinese American cuisine.

This sauce is often made with soy sauce, vinegar, chilis, and a sweetener, then thickened.

Of course, you’ll find loads of variations on the actual sauce ingredients, but overall, a similar flavor and style are obtained depending on the cooks’ personal tastes. It’s so darn good!

Maybe you’ve ordered the beloved General Tso chicken via takeout?! We certainly have.

But today, we’re making our own CFC version of delicious General Tso’s sauce, then slathering perfectly seasoned & browned chicken meatballs in it. I promise you’re gonna want to try this one at home!

Many restaurants make their General Tso’s sauce a little too sweet for me, so I prefer to make it at home so that I can control the flavor. If you like your sauce sweeter, feel free to add a bit more honey.

Meatballs of any type are always A TOTAL HIT and very well-received by my six teenagers/young adults…if meatballs are cooking in the kitchen, the kids seem to make their way down and hang out, hoping for a sample (or two!).

Not completely sure what it is about meatballs, but they really make everyone happy at my house!

They’re great for mealtime, snack time, appetizers, & food prep.

I served these perfectly tender saucy meatballs over brown rice, but they would also be great served over cauliflower rice, quinoa, or mashed potatoes too!

Add a side of broccoli, Bok choy, mushrooms, green beans, or Brussels, and you’ve got the recipe for a perfect meal.

➡️ Leftovers:

Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to three days.

➡️ Serving Size:

One serving is approximately 4 meatballs with 1/2 cup of rice.

➡️ Sauce:

If the sauce thickens too much with the arrowroot, add a splash more broth or water to thin and whisk over low heat.

➡️ More Flavor:

Add black vinegar to the sauce for more flavor or sriracha for spice.

4 servings

Ingredients:

Meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground turkey or chicken
  • 1-inch knob fresh ginger, grated
  • 3 fresh garlic cloves, grated or minced
  • 4 green onions, very finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup almond flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 Tbsps avocado oil or olive oil

General Tso’s Sauce:

  • 2 tsps toasted sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar
  • 1/4 cup coconut aminos, Bragg’s liquid aminos, tamari, or low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup beef bone broth
  • 2 Tbsps raw honey
  • 1 Tbsp GF flour or Arrowroot powder
  • 2 tsp chili flakes, or to taste

GARNISH:

  • 4 green onions, finely sliced
  • sesame seeds

TO SERVE:

  • cooked brown rice, quinoa, or riced cauliflower

Instructions:

In a medium bowl, combine really well all the ingredients for meatballs. Use your palms or a cookie scoop to form small meatballs, you’ll have around 16 meatballs.

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the meatballs while slowly turning them until golden brown on all sides.

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk all of your ingredients for the sauce until very well combined.

Once the meatballs are golden-brown, drizzle over all the sauce the sauce and reduce the heat to LOW.

Simmer your meatballs into the sauce for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens, and the meatballs are no longer pink on the inside.

Garnish with chopped green onions and serve over cooked brown rice, quinoa, or cauliflower rice.

Enjoy!
