Creating A Healthier Lifestyle When Your Partner Is NOT Interested

So, you’ve decided to start your health journey, and you couldn’t be more excited… but your partner is less than enthusiastic. Maybe health and fitness just aren’t for them, or maybe they’re already where they want to be on their journey, but they’re just not in the mood to join you on your journey.

That’s okay! That doesn’t mean you can’t start your journey or that you shouldn’t. The important thing is to find people who are willing to support you on your journey and to find resources that will help you stay focused, motivated, and encouraged on your journey.

Here are a few key things to remember:

1. Make Your Intentions Clear to Your Partner

If they don’t want to join you, that’s fine, but let them know how important this journey is for you and the steps you’re planning to take on your journey. Whether that consists of no longer eating out or ordering in, having a surplus of vegetables and fruits in the house, or dedicating time to work out, your partner should be aware of your new schedule and how important your journey is to you.0

2. Stay Consistent

Once you establish a routine, do your best to stick with it. It may be harder to stay focused if your partner is watching TV in the living room and you’re stuck working out or meal prepping

But remember why you started your journey: to focus on your own physical and mental wellbeing. This process is for you and you alone, and it matters. Don’t forget that!

3. Find a Support System

Whether it’s through joining a gym, an in-person workout class, or an online fitness group, find some people who can keep you accountable and who are on the same journey as you. It’s super important to surround yourself with people who understand the journey you’re on and who will support you through every step.

Be sure to stress the importance of having that support system to your partner so they know why you’re spending time with other people. If they don’t want to be part of your journey, make sure they know that other people will be.

4. Set Intentional Time With Your Partner

If you and your partner used to bond over dinners at restaurants or going to games and eating junk food, that may not be conducive to your new lifestyle. While it’s important to stand firm in your new lifestyle, make sure you’re still setting aside intentional time to spend with your partner.

Maybe find a new hobby or excursion you can share together, or reduce how often you go to games or restaurants that may not fit into your lifestyle anymore. Moderation is always important, and so is spending time with your partner.

At the end of the day, your health journey is your own. Having a partner join you on that journey is wonderful, but it may not be realistic for your relationship. And that’s okay! It’s a personal journey you’re going on.

What’s important is remembering why you’re choosing to pursue your health journey, what you’re hoping to accomplish from it, and communicating your needs to your partner.

Whether they join you or not, you’ll still need their support in other ways, especially when it comes to changing your eating habits, spending more time in the gym, or just needing them there for moral support. Be sure to clearly outline your reasons for starting your health journey and how important having a support system is to your partner.

If you require more support with eating healthy meals, answers to your questions, and accountability to your goals, we have created the 30 Day Clean Eating Challenge.

Within our program, you will learn how to eat clean meals on a regular basis without driving yourself nuts. Learn about how you can join our next 30 Day Clean Eating Challenge, and receive our current seasonal bonuses here.

Remember to stay consistent! Communicate, be vulnerable, and be open about your intentions and hopefully your partner will understand and support you through your journey.

But regardless, this journey is for YOU and you deserve the best. Best of luck!
