Rachel’s Tips for Best Results

  • Use a pitting tool to remove the pits from the cherries in just a few minutes.
  • If you notice the top starting to brown too quickly, cover it lightly with a piece of foil while the crumble finishes baking.
  • Defrost frozen cherries before using if using them in this crumble.
  • 🍯Sweetness factor is a very personal taste preference, so you may want to use more or less pure maple syrup or raw honey, depending on YOUR family’s specific taste preferences.

Variations and Substitutions

Fresh or Frozen Cherries: We love using fresh cherries for this recipe, but frozen cherries will also work. Plus they will be less work since they are normally already pitted!

Cinnamon or not: Most crumbles use cinnamon, but if you don’t like it, you could leave it out. Or better yet, try out a different spice like nutmeg or clove. (I’d love to hear about it if you try it!)

Other Fruits: You can actually make a crumble out of any summertime berry, so see what your favorite is! Also, I love a good pear crumble or cranberry apple crumble around the holidays.

Storage

Fresh cherry crumble will keep in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and only gets better with time! This also freezes well and will keep in the freezer for up to 2 months.

Recipe FAQ’s

What is a crumble dessert?

A crumble is a baked fruit dessert where you utilize a mixture of the fruits own juices and a thickening agent like corn starch to create a fruity sauce, then top it with a crumbly oat or flour topping that works as a quick top crust.

What’s the easiest way to get pits out of cherries?

We recommend using a pitting tool like the one depicted in this post, however, if you don’t have one, you could use a wooden dowel, a chopstick, or anything else that is strong enough to go into one side of the cherry and push the pit out the other side.

What is best for thickening the fruit filling?

We used gluten free flour to thicken our filling, but you could also use corn starch or arrowroot flour to get a similar amount of thickening and they are both also gluten free.
