Homemade Beef Bone Broth:
➡️ What’s really in those seasoning packets?!👀
I love to mix up my own seasonings with organic spices because those little packets of taco seasoning are often made with canola and soybean oils linked to inflammation, sugar, anti-caking agents, and “natural flavors”. Not to mention making my own taco seasonings actually tastes MUCH better too!
BEST Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix
You’ll never purchase those store-bought packets again, after making it yourself!!
So simple, delicious, and lasts for several months – so double or triple this recipe and keep it handy in a small glass container handy for cooking.
Ingredients:
-
2 Tbsps chili powder
-
1 Tbsp ground cumin
-
2 tsps paprika
-
1/2 tsp garlic powder
-
1/2 tsp onion powder
-
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
-
1/2 tsp dried oregano
-
2 tsps sea salt
-
2 tsps ground black pepper
Instructions for taco seasonings:
In a small mixing bowl, whisk all ingredients until combined really well.
Store in an airtight container.
To use your homemade spice mix in recipes, start with a smaller sprinkle – taste test to decide the amount of spice for your family’s taste. Usually, 2 Tablespoons per pound of ground meat is perfect.
🧀 Cheese Please:
Instead of buying pre-shredded cheese, I like to find a block of grass-fed or local cheese ON SALE and shred it myself…. or better yet: enlist one of the kids for this duty.
Most pre-shredded varieties are coated in strange things (anti-caking & clumping) that actually interfere with the natural texture and the beautiful melting qualities.
Cellulose anyone? Turn your package of pre-shredded cheese over and read through the actual ingredients. You may be surprised to see the additives that are there to keep the shreds looking nice in the package.
4 servings
Ingredients:
- 1 cup brown rice
- 1 Tbsp avocado oil, ghee, or beef tallow
- 4 fresh garlic cloves, minced, divided
- 2 cups beef bone broth
- 3 Tbsps homemade taco seasoning, divided
- 1-1/2 lbs lean ground beef
- 1 large onion, diced
- 1 x15ozs black beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 x 14.5 ozs fire roasted tomatoes with juices
Topping suggestions:
- freshly shredded cheddar cheese
- ripe tomatoes, diced
- avocado, pitted and diced
- jalapeños, thinly sliced
Instructions:
For the flavorful brown rice:
Rinse your brown rice well using a fine mesh strainer. Drain excess moisture. In a medium pot add the avocado oil (or oil of your choice) and heat over medium heat.
Add your brown rice and stir until the rice is evenly coated. Cook over medium heat stirring constantly for 3 minutes or so until rice is nicely toasted.
Add one minced garlic clove to the rice and continue to cook for 30 seconds while stirring. Add in 2 cups beef bone broth, and 1 Tablespoon of your homemade taco seasoning.
Stir or whisk until well combined. Turn heat to high, cover tightly with a lid, and bring to a boil.
Once boiling, reduce heat to LOW and simmer for 45 minutes or just until your rice is tender.
Cooking time will vary depending on the type of brown rice you have (check packaging).
You may need to add an extra splash of bone broth during cooking time.
For your meat mixture:
Meanwhile, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and start cooking the beef by crumbling with a spatula. Once the beef is no longer pink, drain any excess grease.
Stir in the diced onion, remaining 2 Tablespoons of taco seasoning, and remaining 3 minced garlic cloves. Continue to cook, stirring often, for about 5 minutes.
Add in your black beans and fire roasted tomatoes with their juice and cook while stirring occasionally for about 5 more minutes.
To assemble your bowls, divide your rice and meat mixture evenly among 4 single-serving bowls. Top your bowls as desired.
Enjoy!
