Chocolate Cream Cheese Ezekiel Toast
AKA: Homemade Nutella Toast!
My teenagers LOVE the taste of Nutella-type spreads so I came up with this less processed (but TOTALLY DELICIOUS) healthier version.
Did you know that in the United States, Ferrero, maker of Nutella, was sued in a class-action lawsuit for false advertising that led some to believe that Nutella carries nutritional and health benefits, being touted as ‘part of a nutritious breakfast’? Yikes!
While Nutella is advertised as a “hazelnut spread”, sugar is the first thing on the ingredient label.
Sugar is THE primary ingredient, comprising almost 60 percent of the Nutella product.
While there is no question that Nutella tastes good, it should not be considered a nutritious breakfast idea.I believe there is a place for everything within a healthy lifestyle, but one of my favorite things to do is to make something that has ZERO real nutritional value (like Nutella) into something really delicious (like the recipe below) that now contains ingredients I feel REALLY good about my growing kids eating as a treat!
I love using pasture-raised “Organic Valley” brand cream cheese when we treat ourselves with cream cheese.
Makes 4-8 servings (I eat 1 toast, my teenagers need 2)
Ingredients:
- 8 oz. organic cream cheese, room temperature
- 2 Tbsps raw honey or pure maple syrup, or to taste
- 4 Tbsps natural hazelnut butter, natural peanut or almond butter
- 1-2 Tbsps unsweetened cacao powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract, OR almond extract
- tiny pinch of sea salt
- 8 Ezekiel, sprouted whole wheat, or rye bread slices, toasted
- 2 Tbsps hemp seeds
Toppings:
- raspberries, blueberries, kiwi, orange, grapes, banana, etc.
Instructions:
In a mixing bowl whisk together the cream cheese, honey/maple syrup, cacao powder, sea salt, and vanilla/almond extract.Taste test to see if you need a touch more sweetener or cacao powder for a more chocolatey taste. Sweetness factor and chocolatey taste are personal preferences, so adjust to your liking.Spread the cream cheese “nutella” mixture onto your toasted bread slices and top with the fruits or berries of your choice as shown.Sprinkle with hemp seeds and enjoy!
