Wellness Tips For the New Year

Happy New Year, CRUSHers! I hope you’re all having an excellent January. Reflections and resolutions are inevitable during the new year, both of which can be so helpful. This time can be a fresh start, a blank canvas on which to paint your dreams and goals.

However, it’s also far too easy to slip into the “new year, new you” rhetoric that can damage your mental and overall health. Many of us tend to set unattainable goals based on negative emotions such as “lose 30 lbs this month.” These rarely succeed and can create anxiety and decreased self-worth rather than motivation and encouragement. Plus, the idea that you weren’t good enough last week and you need to be “fixed” is toxic for your health and self-esteem.

That doesn’t mean resolutions are always awful or reflection is pointless! On the contrary, this time of year can be rejuvenating and motivating, perfect for taking the first step to completing a goal or simply being healthier and happier.

Feel free to embrace the new year, look back at last year, and pursue some simple, attainable goals. To start, here are 8 new year’s wellness tips helpful for your mind, body, and soul all at once:

Sleep More

Here’s a wellness tip (or resolution, if you like using that term) that I’m sure we all need. Getting good, effective, and sufficient sleep is so crucial to your overall health. If you’re already getting 7-9 hours of sleep a night, you may not need to work on this goal, but if you’re struggling to get the sleep you need, then this may be something to prioritize!

Sleep is healing and can affect your mental health, weight, skin health, and so much more. If you need any tips for improving your sleep quality, check out this blog post.

Clear Clutter

Study your surroundings! Is your work area disorganized? Are you surrounded by junk drawers? Are your plants dying? It’s true that cluttered spaces reflect and can help cause cluttered minds. Never underestimate the power of a healthy, clean, and organized house.

Throughout the year, try tackling a different project. Maybe you can go through your closet and donate some clothes. Or purge that junk drawer and organize your kitchen. Try creating a healthier workspace or filling your home with positive things that can improve your physical and mental health, such as plants, books, and workout materials.

Drink Water

If nothing else on this list, try to work on this wellness tip! Drinking enough water is vital to your health. It’s essential for regulating bodily functions, digestion, flushing out toxins, getting clear and shining skin, boosting immunity, and much more. Simply put, a dehydrated body just won’t run efficiently. Unfortunately, the average adult doesn’t drink nearly enough water daily.

Let’s change that this year! Try drinking 50-75% of your body weight in ounces or a gallon a day. Take a bottle with you everywhere, drink a cup before you eat in the morning and before you go to sleep, and try any of these tips to help you drink more water.

Get Moving

I’m not saying you have to do a super intense, long workout every day or become a CrossFit champion, but try squeezing in some exercise whenever you can. Assess your lifestyle, abilities, and dreams to develop some attainable yet challenging goals. For example, have some of your meetings while walking or try a yoga routine at night while watching your favorite TV show.

Find something you enjoy that is doable with your schedule, so exercise doesn’t become a chore. And consider bringing a friend with you! Having a workout partner improves results and can make the entire experience more enjoyable. Plus, it’s a chance to bond with loved ones!

Clean Your Diet

Diet is the likely root of many difficulties. Getting your essential vitamins and nutrients is vital for almost everything, such as supporting brain function, managing stress, lowing the risk of disease, and improving gut health! Improving your diet isn’t synonymous with struggling through a crash diet or depriving yourself of foods you enjoy. This can be an easy, attainable shift with endless benefits!

Start small by adding a vegetable to your dinner or eating more berries and protein. If you need to reset, look into a detox such as our 3-Day Inflammation Detox or our 10-Day Total Mind and Body detox. Try something sustainable, like clean eating, rather than a “quick fix.” If you need a little guidance, the 30 day challenge comes with meal plans, recipes, and a fabulous private support group!

Listen to Your Brain

Your brain tells you what it needs – whether it’s sleep, silence, some green veggies, or time with friends. So, be sure to listen to it! Mental health is just as important as physical health.

This near year, set yourself some mindfulness goals. Meditate ten minutes every day, listen to calming music, try forest bathing, or even add a nap to your schedule. Whatever helps you get in a better headspace, reduce stress and anxiety, and increase general happiness so you can live your best life!

It may also be helpful to keep a journal, either for health reasons or to simply write down your thoughts. Consider writing down personal mantras such as “I can do this” and “I am enough” in your journal or listing things you’re grateful for. There is power in putting words to the positive things in life!

Practice Skin Care

Examine your skincare routine and see where you can improve it. We all can and should care for our skin, hair, and bones better at any age, whether for beauty reasons or simple health and strength. Perhaps you want to try more DIY products or replace your current ones with more all-natural, non-toxic products. For example, cold-pressed organic virgin coconut oil can be a solid replacement for moisturizers.

And if your routine is almost non-existent, maybe your first goal should simply be to learn more about skincare, the myths and facts, and how you can start small. But I know the industry can be confusing, so I put together these 12 tips for keeping your skin happy, healthy, and glowing.

Support Your Friends

Humans are incredibly social creatures, and all of us crave supportive, loving, and meaningful relationships. This year, focus on how you can be a better friend, sibling, child, spouse, parent, or anything else. Support your loved ones in their new year’s endeavors! Try getting together and keeping each other accountable with your clean eating or exercise goals.

We can all learn how to love better this year. Maybe we need to be more patient or get to know our friend’s love languages to show them we care more efficiently. Pinpoint where you struggle so you know where you can work to do better. If you have trust issues, maybe try being more vulnerable with one of your close friends. Or perhaps you should practice apologizing when needed and forgiving where you can. Help your friends believe in themselves! “A friend is someone who makes it easy to believe in yourself.” -Heidi Wills

Whatever your new year looks like, remember to give yourself grace. You do not have to be perfect, and you don’t have to change who you are. You’re incredible as you are right now, resolution or not.

But if you want to make positive changes, go for it! We all support you here at CFC. I hope one of my wellness tips above gives you an idea or a jumping-off point for your personal goals this year. Share in the comments below what some of your resolutions, tips, or goals are this year so we can support each other!

But whatever you do, always remember that your success doesn’t change your value. Now let’s make this a great year for positivity, kindness, and health.

You’ve got this, CRUSHers!
